P. Diddy Launches DiddyTV Channel on YouTube
Mashable has an informative blog entry on P. Diddy’s (formerly Puff Daddy) new channel on YouTube, DiddyTV.
All I have to say is.. what an entrepreneur. Leveraging the popularity and low-cost marketing factor of YouTube to promote his upcoming album (due out later this month). This tactic wouldn’t work for any artist though. If some new band or R&B singer sets up a channel on YouTube, there’s probably a really slim chance of major publicity — unless you’re of the caliber of Barats and Bereta or Lonelygirl15 (yes, there are a few exceptions).
I think the key attraction factor of DiddyTV is that all the videos star Diddy himself. It’s very personal, raw, and has almost a homemade-DV feel. This approach makes the viewer develop a more personal connection with the artist i.e. it sheds the superstar status of Diddy.
P. Diddy could set new precedence if his album sales do very well. Mass marketing to the youth via YouTube or other online social network communities (think Facebook, it’s already been done on MySpace) could be the next big thing — if done right i.e. not shoved in your face with ads.
I think Diddy’s got his head on straight. What is there to lose?

Actually, Sean Combs is formerly Puff Daddy and formerly P. Diddy, as he is just Diddy now =P Yeah, I have a hard time keeping up with his name change as well. Regardless, I am actually excited about his new album, Press Play, mainly because of one line that Diddy expressed: “As time evolved, and I started traveling around the world and going into dance and techno clubs, I began to see music from a global point of view. It all came together on Press Play, all those sounds in my head. I’ve evolved, studied the game, been a part of it, had success. It all comes down to press play.”
